Watch as I perform manual meibomian gland expression to treat a painful stye (hordeolum). When the tiny oil glands on the edge of the eyelid become clogged, the oil hardens and traps bacteria. Using specialized forceps, controlled pressure is applied to the base of the gland to squeeze out the thick, infected meibum. Clearing this blockage instantly relieves pressure and allows the eyelid to properly heal!

Note that this stye was treated with Lumenis Optilight IPL as well as red and blue low-level light therapy to melt the oils as much as possible, as well as to reduce bacterial load. If a stye becomes chronic (usually non-resolved after 3-6months time), then surgical excision may be considered. We leave surgery as the last resort.
